His work is amazing and the videos he has are some of the best around; they are raw, real and chock full of information. I love to go back and just watch some of these videos as they are just inspiring to me in the fact that Tommy does an awesome job of taking something that is complicated, or seems daunting, and breaks it down into its most simple form and makes it look easy. It was this inspiration/attitude that made me want to build the coffee table with a double bead time, cabriole legs, etc. Definitely check out his site and his videos; heck, sign up for the forum too!

So anyways, today I was cruising around The 207 Forum and came across a post that mentioned that Tommy is in the process of getting with WGBH out of Boston. This would be amazing! I know the shows would be better "quality" in the fact that the videos that Tommy has on his site are pretty raw with him walking around with a camera on a tri pod, but there is something neat about that to me. Anyways, I think it would be amazing for Tommy to have a show to validate the hard work he has done, and put on display all of his amazing work and talent. The other great thing about Tommy is how much he gives back to the woodworking community. Just look at his videos and all the information he gives for free on those things! Also, the 207, there are some great build alongs and other things on there; just full of information.

I hadnt originally intended on making free woodworking patterns available until I started to realize how much time it takes to create a pattern from scratch. Since I usually create a pattern to run on a CNC router, it has to be in a vector graphics format suitable for cutting on a computerized machine. As such, quite a bit of time goes into making sure the geometry and formatting is just right.
As is the case with other woodworking plans, a pattern often gets used only once and then is discarded or forgotten. By making them available here, my hope is that you will find something to help you with one of your own projects. Also, vector graphics are easy to shrink, stretch, or modify into something new altogether. So even if you dont find something to meet your needs exactly, it might provide a good starting point.
If you dont already use a program like Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, or even AutoCAD, I encourage you to check out a free vector graphics program like Inkscape. Vector graphics are nearly infinitely scalable and fairly easy to modify. Theyre also perfect for use in CNC routing operations, water jet or plasma cutting of metals and plastics, and even embroidery.

Retro style

For years Ive been wanting to make a new coffee table. After making the credenza/TV stand a few weeks ago, I was motivated to make another "mid-century modern" piece. This time I wasnt adhering exactly to any particular 50s style coffee table, but rather I wanted something to echo the credenzas design. After years of building up a mish-mash of furniture, it is nice to finally have a couple pieces that go together!


A lot of the construction of this is similar to the credenza, so in this video I tried to focus on a few techniques that I glossed over in the other video. I know, I know: retro furniture isnt to everyones taste, but you should be able to pick up a few tips in this that might help you do design your own coffee table.

Knock-down knock-off

A lot of woodworkers scoff at the furniture sold at big box retailers such as Ikea. Its a snooty, elitist attitude. The knock-down furniture sold at these stores enables people who arent wealthy to furnish their homes and apartments with some pretty stylish pieces. Contrary to what some woodworkers seem think, not every twenty-something can afford to hire a woodworker to design and build custom Greene and Greene furniture. Nor would they necessarily want to.

This week I am embracing much-maligned knock-down furniture and inviting it into the realm of woodworking. Our craft should be expanded and its barriers to entry reduced. This style of furniture is easy and fun to replicate and can be built with limited tools and space. Looking down our noses at the practicality of affordable, factory furniture does nothing to expand the dwindling numbers of woodworkers. I believe woodworking is for everyone.

Some woodworkers seem to define "real woodworking" by the cost of the materials used and the color of their tools. I built this storage rack using melamine for the shelves and painted store-bought dowels for the legs. If you would like to turn this into a "fine" woodworking project just use bubinga or cocobolo wood and boast about how much you paid per board-foot.

Building options


You can easily make this stand with a hand saw, jigsaw or a circular saw. Instead of making the holes for shelf pins, use some of those metal hose clamps. Slide them in place along the dowels wherever you want to position the shelves.

Plywood would be a great choice for the shelves. To make this even less expensive, you could experiment using free pallet wood. Id love to see what you come up with!

This is the enjoyable part. Cut everything to size according to your cutting list or plan. For that you need tools. A beginner can start off with hand tools, but they need specific skills, which can be learned from books, workshop training or someone who is already an expert etc.
Power tools make the job so much easier and more accurate. However these can be expensive and one will have to be very careful in choosing what to buy. A power drill, a router as well as a hand-held circular saw would be first on my list and then the workshop can be extended as your expertise increases and your budget allows.
You will find that as your experience increases more ambitious projects can be tackled. Family members, neighbors and friends may approach you to make things for them. The satisfaction of creating something from random pieces of wood is absolutely wonderful.
